PERSONAL LETTER - Daniel Pritchard
From a young age I have had an interest in film and TV. At
the age of 10 I started making You Tube videos with my friends. I enjoy
watching films and am interested in the process of film-making. I particularly enjoy the sci-fi genre and am
interesting in exploring this with a view to the human psyche. Drama and
documentary are also of great interest to me, particularly those containing a
twist or surprise. I have enjoyed the
opportunity to study the 180 Credit Media Diploma at Long Road Sixth Form
College and have developed many skills during this course. I want to extend my skills and knowledge of
film production further by undertaking a film production degree at Portsmouth
University. This would give me the knowledge and experience to carry on my passion
for film and will allow to carry out my dream of being able to tell stories through
the medium of film.
Studying the Media Diploma at Long Road has increased my
knowledge of various film production techniques such as sound, camera work,
directing and lighting. I have used a variety of different software relevant to
film production such as Abobe PremierPro and Adobe scriptwriter. I would like
to gain experience using film production software, which is used in the film industry
such as Avid. Portsmouth University would allow me to gain this experience and
knowledge. I have pre-production experience such as carrying out risk
assessments, script reviews, analysis, and recces. This experience would help
me when studying the directing fiction and TV production units on the course. The
course also involved creating a radio drama.
I have written various scripts during my course and this is an area I am
particularly enjoying. I have started
writing a script based on the local legend of Hereward. It has been enjoyable weaving my own ideas
into known story elements. The experience and passion I have for script wiring
will be furthered when studying the script writing unit at Portsmouth
University.
For my year 10 work experience I worked within the drama
department of my school helping to come up with the concept for a World War 1
based drama activity for younger children.
During this I was also involved with set design and lighting. Working in a team of six we produced,
designed and then ran the drama workshop from a basic brief. I took a lead role facilitating the younger
children to create their drama in a structured way. Directing is area of film production that I enjoy and wish to continue. Being able to study units which involve directing is another reason why this course would be most suited to me.
I have an interest in sci-fi and comic related series. I like to find out about the back stories and
get a deeper understanding of this genre .I do this by watching relevant blogs
and documentaries and also by visiting events such as ComiCon and other
conventions. During a recent Star Wars convention,
I was interested to attend a panel involving the creative team at ILM. I like to spend my spare time socialising with my friends and visiting new places.
I find it interesting exploring new places, communities, and
cultures. I find this helps in
developing my creative ideas. Recently I went on a college trip to New York to
visit a film museum and to learn about the culture in the city.
I think this course will help me to develop and learn new
skills relevant to Film production and I will be able to refine my creative ideas. I
am excited to work with similar passionate individuals. I like working collaboratively and work well
in a team. I think I would be well
suited for this course as I have lots of ideas, I get stuck in and am not
afraid to get my hands dirty. I will go
the extra mile to achieve the best product I can. In the future I would like to work in the
film industry. I am keen to experience
all I can about the industry to help me narrow my creative focus.
