| 1. editing / post-production | The killers when we were young- It has been colour corrected and graded. Fast cuts throughout the video. Pulp disco 2000- the entire video is formatted in a square. Colour correction. Masked a TV over the image. Edited text over image. |
| 2. Mise-en-scene | The killers when we were young- Religious imagery such as crosses, rosary beads, churches, candles and pictures of Jesus. The band feature in the video. A variety of instruments such as guitar, bass guitar drums and microphone are shown in the video. Pulp disco 2000- Props that were used includes TV, hairdryers, washing machines, mirrors, pints of beer. Paper cut outs. |
| 3. Content / performance | The killers when we were young- The band feature in the video 1-minute in. Actors are portraying south/central American characters. Pulp disco 2000- The band feature in the music videos. Young actors portraying clubbers feature throughout the video. |
| 4. camera shot/angles types | The killers when we were young- Extreme close up shots of actors. A close up shot of actor smoking and breathing out smoke. An extreme close up shot of a female actors face with the sunlight beaming on her. Group shots of the band and medium shots of individual bands members playing. Close up shots of the lead singer singing. Pulp disco 2000-Exteme closeups |
| 5. narrative | The killers when we were young- It is about a relationship that started off good when the couple were young and they get married but as the couple have got older the relationship turns sour, the husband abuses the wife and cheats on her. At the end of the video the wife see the band in a bar which they have been playing at throughout the whole video and the main singer gives her a look which suggest that she should not be with her husband. She then turns to her husband and carries on her relationship with him. Pulp disco 2000- The video was released in 1995 and it portays the life of two actors, a male and female. It is also mirroring nightlife of the 1980’s. It is suggesting that there will be a revival of disco in the year. 2000. |
| 6. conform / subvert / amplify (tone of lyrics & music) | The song is reflecting on how the relationship was better when the couple were young. The lyrics “he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus” I think this is suggesting he is not innocent. The video conforms with the lyrics and tone of the music. There are references to Jesus and religion in the song and the music video portrays this with a lot of religious imagery such as a wedding, churches, candles, crosses and rosary beads. |
4 Things I've Learnt From Making a Music Video:
-Always use a tripod, hand held camera shots don't tend to work.
-Check with a friend or outside source whether the narrative is clear.
-Vary your shots and editing techniques. The bits that are more visually interesting are when it's not just a series of shots linked together. Lots of short shots work better, if the shot is too long on the same thing we lose interest.
-When doing lip synching always do more than one shot and practice lots beforehand!
Comparison between George Michael's 'Careless whisper' and Akon's 'smack that'.
They both have elements of romance in their music video.
They both have shots where it switches between the narrative and the main singer.
Akon's music video has a happy ending whereas George Michaels music video has a sad ending.
Akon's music is gritty and dirty. Many scenes from the video are shown in underground basements and and in the streets and shows Akon being released from prison. George Michaels video is very classy and shows him on yachts and living in an upmarket apartment with a sea view.
They both are set in cities.

Andrew Goodwin's music video theory- Dancing in the distraction factory
Backstreet boys-Everybody
1) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
The music video 'Everybody' is in the style of the horror genre. Its got a very 1990's cliche feel. Its very cheesy and dramatic at the same time. The dancing, props and costumes reflect this. It has slight similarities to the musical phantom of the opera. They have used certain props and choreography that is similar to this musical but have given it their own pop element.
Comparison between Backstreet Boys' everybody and Calvin Harris-This is what you came for feat Rhianna. The genre isn't as apparent as in the backstreet boys video because there isn't much of a story line and there is a lot of special effects used such as flashing lights and use of green screens. It is similar to what you would expect to see in some independent art films. It also has a sense of sci-fi to it. Some of the scenes could be related to the matrix. In conclusion the backstreet boys music video shows a clearer genre than other music video I have looked at.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOkQ4T5WO9E- Calvin Harris - This Is What You Came For ft. Rihanna.
2) There is frequently reference to notion of looking
The music video starts off with telling a story with no music or dancing. It then develops to a highly organised choreographed dance that is reasonably innocent and doesn't have any voyeuristic treatment of the female body. The scenes of this cuts to the member's of the group turning into monsters and then cuts to a voyeuristic scene of a scantly dressed attractive female looking directly into the camera with wind blowing into her hair. Another suggestive scene is a female licking a coffin. Another voyeuristic scene is when a member of the group dressed as a vampire is being very touchy feely towards an attractive female and it shows him almost kissing her neck.
Comparison between Backstreet boys- Everybody and Disclosure - Magnets ft. Lorde. Disclosure's music video is very sexual. The whole music video is based around the main singer having an affair and shows quite a lot of sexual scenes surrounding this event. Compared to backstreet boys this video is way more explicit. Backstreet boys are more hinting towards voyeuristic scenes whereas the other music video is very upfront with the voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This video follows Andrew Goodwin's rule a lot more than the backstreet boys's music video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_KfnGBtVeA Disclosure - Magnets ft. Lorde
3) There is a relationship between music and visuals
In this music video there is not a lot of connection between the lyrics and the plot. The lyrics are very generic and describe having a party. There a couple of scenes where the lyrics match up to the plot. The lyrics "throw your hand up in the air" then shows a couple of actors dancing with thier hands in the air. The lyrics "rock your body" and "shake your body" shows various actors and dancing doing exactly this.
Comparison between The Streets - Blinded By Lights and the Backstreet boys-Everybody. In the streets music video the main singer does nearly everything that he say's. For example "I wish this bar lady would appear so she can come and serve overhear" The scene shows him waiting at a bar. Whereas in the Backstreet boys's video it doesn't follow Andrew Goodwin's rule anywhere near as much as it does in the streets music video.

We are aiming for a PG classification because we want all ages to be able to watch and access it. We also want it to be shown on music channels such as 4 Music and MTV throughout the day, not limited to watershed. This means that more people will be exposed to our music video.
We will also have the video on YouTube, as other Take That songs are on there too, and we want our video to go alongside them. YouTube has restrictions on adult content, but as our video will be rated PG, these restrictions will not apply.

P3
a) review the footage

b) Did you follow the script/storyboard?
We followed the beginning of the storyboard and script. We filmed what we had drawn on the storyboard mostly, but we added in more aspects to the story which we hadn't planned on our storyboard, and included more shot variety. We did this because the footage we had wasn't enough to fill the entire length of the song. We also filmed scenes that weren't in the story board, and ended up changing the ending of our music video. We did this because we felt the new ending complimented the feel of the song better than our original ending; We wanted to end it on a good note rather than a bad note.

c) did you follow safe working practices?
We did follow safe working practices, for example we told members of the public in the park that we were filming for a college music video, and asked if they were ok with us being there to avoid any confusion of our intentions. We also made sure we knew where the fire exits were in the sweet shop when we were filming there, in case of an emergency. We made sure our filming intentions were clear when we were performing the chase, to ensure members of the public didn't believe it was real and try to stop Luke (who played the thief).
d) the production process is generally something like 1/ ideas 2/ script 3/ storyboard, and 4/ recces 5/ filming. How did you follow this process, and what did you do differently/went wrong?
We came up with our idea first. After that we then completed the scrip. Following the script, we completed the storyboard and the recces at the same time. Then we filmed our footage, and it was upon reviewing the footage that we decided to change the story slightly and add in scenes, so we then repeated the filming process. We continued to review and improve our footage for several days until we felt we had enough quality footage to edit with.
e) what genre did you decide on and what genre conventions did you use?
There are links between the lyrics and the visuals. For example 'if you want it come and get it' The link here is the thief has the chocolate bar and the protagonist wants it so they decide to go and get it. This links into the pop genre and this is a pop video with hints of drama.
f) How did you know the equipment: sound and camera were working correctly - what process did you go through?
We used a flycam for some of the tracking shots. We did a test shoot to make sure we knew how to use the flycam. We also used a shoulder mount for panning shots. We learnt how to assemble the shoulder mount and also practiced shooting with it before using it for our main footage.

They both are set in cities.

music video thory
In conclusion the backstreet boys music video shows a clearer genre than other music video I have looked at.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M6samPEMpM- Backstreet boys-Everybody
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOkQ4T5WO9E- Calvin Harris - This Is What You Came For ft.

H) certification
We are aiming for a PG classification because we want all ages to be able to watch and access it. We also want it to be shown on music channels such as 4 Music and MTV throughout the day, not limited to watershed. This means that more people will be exposed to our music video.
We will also have the video on YouTube, as other Take That songs are on there too, and we want our video to go alongside them. YouTube has restrictions on adult content, but as our video will be rated PG, these restrictions will not apply.

Asking permission to use the song

Permission to film at sweetshop

P3
a) review the footage

b) Did you follow the script/storyboard?

We already had the knowledge of how to use the camera from previous units. To make sure the camera was working properly we carried out test shots and also our main set up was a tripod and a camera which you can see in the photo below. We changed different lenses for different shots. We used a fixed 50 mm prime lens when using a tripod. You cannot zoom in with this lens, so we used it for medium shots that were still and didn't have much action in. We used a standard 18-55 mm lens for the majority of our shots. Especially the action shots that didn't require a tripod and involved the camera man running alongside the actors. Also this lens was used for tracking shots.
We used a zoom lens for one far away shot. The image below with the actor on the bridge was the shot we used this lens for. The cameraman was below the bridge. We tested out the 3 different lenses we had for his shot and found that the zoom lens worked best.
We used a flycam for some of the tracking shots. We did a test shoot to make sure we knew how to use the flycam. We also used a shoulder mount for panning shots. We learnt how to assemble the shoulder mount and also practiced shooting with it before using it for our main footage.
